Ausonius’ Ludus septem sapientum exhibits significant consonances with some poems of the Anthologia Palatina on the Seven Wise Men. These elements of epigrammatic origin are inserted into a unitary architecture, which, thanks to the fusion with some progymnasmatic techniques, vivifies a potentially trite theme and thus shows that a work born at the crossroads between poetry and school can have legitimate ambitions of novitas.

Abstract

Ausonius’ Ludus septem sapientum exhibits significant consonances with some poems of the Anthologia Palatina on the Seven Wise Men. These elements of epigrammatic origin are inserted into a unitary architecture, which, thanks to the fusion with some progymnasmatic techniques, vivifies a potentially trite theme and thus shows that a work born at the crossroads between poetry and school can have legitimate ambitions of novitas.
