Quando la fonte epigrafica può spingerci oltre

This paper examines the theme of the recovery of epigraphic models in the early medieval period, focusing in particular on the city of naples. By considering the possibilities offered by a combined palaeographic and historical-archaeological approach, the study compares two significant graphic monuments of elite context: the inscription of Prince Sico of Benevento († 832) and the funerary epitaph of the neapolitan Duke Bono († 834). This comparison allows for the extraction of ‘alternative’ information on the development, in the 9th century, of a propaganda project centered around the figure of Saint Januarius.

Il contributo esamina il tema del recupero dei modelli epigrafici in età altomedievale, focalizzando, in particolare, l’attenzione sulla città di Napoli. Ragionando sulle possibilità offerte da un approccio congiunto di carattere paleografico e storico archeologico, lo studio pone a confronto due importanti monumenti grafici di ambito elitario: l’iscrizione del principe Sicone di Benevento († 832) e l’epigrafe funeraria del duca napoletano Bono († 834). Tale confronto consente di ricavare informazioni ‘alternative’ sullo sviluppo, durante il IX secolo, di un progetto propagandistico che ruota intorno alla figura di san Gennaro.
