Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, a relatively significant number of Non-recognised States (NRS) have emerged in the former-Soviet region. Said NRS encounter numerous challenges that stems from non-recognition and that have an impact on the lives of their citizens. This article examines the citizenship of the former-Soviet NRS and the challenges encountered by holders of such citizenships, particularly in their interactions with other European States (including EU Member States, the UK, and the EEA), where said citizenship is generally not recognised. Furthermore, individuals seek to obtain the citizenship of the patron State, even when this is issued in violation of international law. Finally, the focus moves on to the practice of European States, highlighting the limitations of their approach and the contradiction that they may inadvertently reinforce the role of the patron State.
