This paper presents the features of a writing laboratory in Italian as L2, designed in a pragmatic and functional perspective and addressed to advanced language learners. The aim of the study is to give an account of the analytical and operational tools provided to the learners in order to stimulate their development of textual competence, with respect to various text types. For this purpose, in the article the activities concerning descriptive text proposed to the participants are analysed as an example: firstly, the contribution presents the ways and the techniques employed to guide students through an analysis of the distinctive features of descriptive text, using real texts provided as models; secondly, some cases of reuse of such features in texts written by the learners in the context of the laboratory are examined.
