One of the most relevant aspects of the Simón Ruiz Archive’s commercial letters is the enormous quantity of abbreviations that appear in them. Through the study of 75 letters exchanged with the city of Venice between 1578 and 1592, this paper aims to illustrate the problems related to the presence of abbreviated forms in these documents and demonstrate the importance of considering the uses of the manuscripts while resolving them. To this end, it analyses the principal linguistic and extra-linguistic factors that may affect their correct interpretation, including the different origin of the senders and the graphic and phonetic changes in modern Spanish.

Abstract
One of the most relevant aspects of the Simón Ruiz Archive’s commercial letters is the enormous quantity of abbreviations that appear in them. Through the study of 75 letters exchanged with the city of Venice between 1578 and 1592, this paper aims to illustrate the problems related to the presence of abbreviated forms in these documents and demonstrate the importance of considering the uses of the manuscripts while resolving them. To this end, it analyses the principal linguistic and extra-linguistic factors that may affect their correct interpretation, including the different origin of the senders and the graphic and phonetic changes in modern Spanish.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
