On the basis of some fake works of art and antiquities from the collection of the patrician Girolamo Ascanio Molin (1738-1814), the essay proposes some initial reflections on the Venetian forgery market between the 18th and 19th centuries, its protagonists and its dynamics. Through the analysis of known and unknown case studies, the article focuses on the procedures used by collectors and connoisseurs to determine the authenticity of historical-artistic and archaeological objects, highlighting the role of the Academies and the experts gathered around them in the elaboration of a method in the years of the first developments in applied chemical and physical sciences and the historicisation of artistic phenomena.
