This paper takes into account Lucretius’ description of the sexual intercourse (Lucr. 4.1079-1083, 1105-1114) in relation to the zoologic anecdote of the mating between vipers narrated in Herodotus and in Nicander’s Theriaca (vv. 128-134). The anecdote and Nicander’s description seem to be exploited as a filter through which it is possible to interpret the erotic desire: as for the vipers, sexual instinct is presented as a deathly impulse to absorb each other, which human beings cannot fulfil.

Abstract
This paper takes into account Lucretius’ description of the sexual intercourse (Lucr. 4.1079-1083, 1105-1114) in relation to the zoologic anecdote of the mating between vipers narrated in Herodotus and in Nicander’s Theriaca (vv. 128-134). The anecdote and Nicander’s description seem to be exploited as a filter through which it is possible to interpret the erotic desire: as for the vipers, sexual instinct is presented as a deathly impulse to absorb each other, which human beings cannot fulfil.File in questo prodotto:
