The archaeology of Buddhism has devoted little space to early urban Buddhist practices and spaces, while it has focused mainly on monastic complexes and 'rural' stupas. The apsidal Buddhist temple discovered in the ancient city of Barikot (northern Pakistan) is, together with the stupas of Taxila and Butkara, the earliest evidence of Buddhism and typically Indian architecture in the Indo-Iranian borderland. Its urban location offers us the opportunity to rethink the urban dimension of early Buddhism.

Abstract
The archaeology of Buddhism has devoted little space to early urban Buddhist practices and spaces, while it has focused mainly on monastic complexes and 'rural' stupas. The apsidal Buddhist temple discovered in the ancient city of Barikot (northern Pakistan) is, together with the stupas of Taxila and Butkara, the earliest evidence of Buddhism and typically Indian architecture in the Indo-Iranian borderland. Its urban location offers us the opportunity to rethink the urban dimension of early Buddhism.File in questo prodotto:
