This article analyses the relationship that two little-known sixteenth-century ‘spicciolate’, the 'Novella' by Giovanni Guidiccioni and the 'Gualtieri' by Bernardino Percivalli, have with the Boccaccian model, from the point of view of the contents and the linguistic choices that their authors made. Thus, it sheds light on the peculiarities of the sixteenth-century ‘spicciolate’ in comparison with the fifteenth-century tradition, also considering their spread outside Tuscany.

Abstract

This article analyses the relationship that two little-known sixteenth-century ‘spicciolate’, the 'Novella' by Giovanni Guidiccioni and the 'Gualtieri' by Bernardino Percivalli, have with the Boccaccian model, from the point of view of the contents and the linguistic choices that their authors made. Thus, it sheds light on the peculiarities of the sixteenth-century ‘spicciolate’ in comparison with the fifteenth-century tradition, also considering their spread outside Tuscany.
