The paper concerns an unsolved problem of Martial's tradition: the stemmatic relationship among the main manuscripts of the third family (CA). After the collation of an extended section of Martial's Liber epigrammaton (I, II, IV, VI-X) and on the basis of previous complete collation (I, III, V), the most probable stemma concerning AEXV is proposed and discussed. In addition, some textual evidence is taken into account to argue the possibility of an early process of contamination, mainly with regard to X.

Abstract

The paper concerns an unsolved problem of Martial's tradition: the stemmatic relationship among the main manuscripts of the third family (CA). After the collation of an extended section of Martial's Liber epigrammaton (I, II, IV, VI-X) and on the basis of previous complete collation (I, III, V), the most probable stemma concerning AEXV is proposed and discussed. In addition, some textual evidence is taken into account to argue the possibility of an early process of contamination, mainly with regard to X.
