In his seminal 1963 book Patrons and Painters, Francis Haskell did not hesitate to describe Anton Maria Zanetti the Elder (1680-1767) as "an intermediary between Venice and the rest of Europe". Through the study of this interesting figure and the analysis of some sources previously unknown to scholars, this essay seeks to provide an original key to interpreting the influence on artistic tastes that France exercised over Venice in the eighteenth century.
