The formulaic style is what characterizes Homeric epic poetry. It makes use of formulas, i.e. the repetition of fixed expressions, epithets, similes and τόποι, i.e. fixed narrative schemes, consolidated by a long tradition. Therefore, in the Homeric poems, composed in dactylic hexameters, we find the use of fixed formulas, for example to mark the end and the beginning of a speech, to designate recurring events in the course of the narration, such as the scene of a banquet, the departure of a ship, description of a battle, etc.; epithets that are repeated, as in "Achilles pie' swift". There is a wide use of rhetorical figures, including alliteration, similitude, metaphor, or even the use of patronymics, for which the expression "Achille pie' swift" could appear with the variation "Il Pelide Achille ”, depending on the metric requirements that arise.
