Abstract

e “family resemblances” that one senses in a novel by Carlo Della Corte (1933-2000) and in the film Fatal Attraction (1987), can be traced back to the attention that both pay to gothic and melodramatic models. To put side by side Della Corte and Adrian Lyne is as plausible as to compare New York and Venice on the basis of a common structural principle: two metropolis, the latter of the past, and the former of the present, both built on islands etc. However, in the less pretentious relation between an Italian novel and an American film, the exchange of building bricks between Italian and American literature seems to be based on Gramsci’s intuition relative to the pre-eminence of each literary culture in a given genre, which is favoured by the public beyond the assumed borders of language and culture. us, the success of the Italian melodrama abroad is mirrored in the Italian public’s obstinate habit of reading novels translated into Italian. On the other hand, what we have said may be considered as a homage to the posthumous memory of a great Venetian writer of the 1900s.
