The Italian Archaeological Mission in Sudan has been working in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Jebel Barkal for fifty years, and since 2011 has been sponsored by Ca’ Foscari University of Venice. As part of an integrated promotion project funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Italian Embassy in Khartoum, a trilingual (Italian/English-Arabic) comic book on the archaeological activities and history of the site was produced, donated to Sudanese museums and presented in local primary schools. The Mission continues to work on this imprint, trying to convey the past in a direct and concise way, using means that are pleasant and immediately accessible, but also scientifically rigorous. This is an increasingly urgent need in a reality such as that of Sudan, which is currently beset by a fierce war and the consequent risk to which the country’s cultural heritage is exposed on a daily basis.
