In Louis-Sébastien Mercier theoretical writings and dramas composed during the last quarter of 18th century, for the first time we find the principles of a popular theatre which intends to morally raise each person. One of the main tools to reach persuasion are images and Marcier experiments a new creative process : he inserts tableaux vivants and silent expressive gestural moments in the principal scenes, to touch public sensibility. In several points, Mercier’s project discloses the theatrical reforms that the founders of Théâtre National Populaire will bring about during 20th century.
