The original project for this issue of RSV. Rivista di Studi Vittoriani stemmed from the conference Walter Pater at the Crossroads of Knowledge that we organised at Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia on 29 October 2021. The event was the outcome of a collaboration between the Department of Comparative Linguistic and Cultural Studies of Università Ca’ Foscari and Iuav University of Venice, under the aegis of the PhD on History of Arts of Ca’ Foscari. In addition to us organisers, Stefano Evangelista and Giles Whiteley took part as international invited specialists. Walter Pater at the Crossroads of Knowledge aimed to illuminate Pater’s work from a comparative perspective by concentrating on his role as a mediator between different cultural traditions, aesthetics, and styles of thought, as well as an experimenter in multiple modes of writing. The 2021 conference was followed by Aestheticism: Sensations and Ideas , an International Walter Pater Society conference, organised by Elisa Bizzotto, Joseph Bristow, Stefano Evangelista, Rebecca Mitchell, and Giles Whiteley and held at Iuav University of Venice on 14-16 July 2022. Aestheticism: Sensations and Ideas was a large conference, with over thirty speakers and a final roundtable dedicated to the ongoing OUP Edition of the Collected Works of Walter Pater, to which some of the contributors of this RSV issue were and in certain cases still are working.
