The paper presents an update on the I.Sicily project - an open access corpus of inscriptions from ancient Sicily available online since 2017 and currently under development - and on the ERC project Crossreads (grant agreement no. 885040), initiated in 2020 and currently ongoing. A case study illustrates the work carried out so far, highlighting the research undertaken on the large group of inscriptions from the Elymian area. The I.Sicily and Crossreads projects are the two axes of long-term focus on the epigraphy of ancient Sicily, aiming at an objective, systematic, and wide-ranging study – diachronic, interlinguistic, and diatopic. The case study presents the transdisciplinary perspective on the epigraphic document that constitutes the core of the Crossreads project, highlighting the potential of the digital approach to deal effectively with problems such as linguistic ambiguity, the encoding of non-alphabetic or para-alphabetic graffiti, the distinction between alphabets, the objective classification of inscribed objects and text types, and the translation of fragmentary or uninterpreted texts such as inscriptions from the Elymian area.
Il contributo è volto a presentare un aggiornamento sul progetto I.Sicily, corpus di iscrizioni dalla Sicilia antica liberamente fruibile online dal 2017 e in via di implementazione, e sul progetto ERC Crossreads (grant agreement no. 885040), cominciato nel 2020 e ad oggi in corso, proponendo, come caso studio per mostrare il lavoro finora condotto, la ricerca svolta sul nutrito gruppo di iscrizioni proveniente dall’area elima. I progetti I.Sicily e Crossreads costituiscono le due anime di un lavoro sull’epigrafia della Sicilia antica teso a un’oggettiva sistematica e ampia indagine – interlinguistica diacronica e diatopica – sull’epigrafia siciliana. Attraverso il caso studio si presenta la prospettiva transdisciplinare al documento epigrafico al centro del progetto Crossreads, mettendo in luce le potenzialità dell’approccio digitale nel trattare efficacemente problemi come l’ambiguità linguistica, la codifica dei graffiti non-alfabetici o para-alfabetici, la distinzione tra gli alfabeti, l’oggettiva classificazione dei supporti e delle tipologie di testo e la traduzione dei testi frammentari o non interpretati quali le iscrizioni di area elima.
