Th is paper presents and discusses the results of the surveys and excavations carried out in the Italian Central Alps from the beginning of the Holocene to the present. More precisely, it regards the discoveries made from the end of the 1960s, when the fi rst Mesolithic sites were found. Since then a few sites were excavated and radiocarbon-dated. Th ey confi rm that the peopling of this transect of the southern Alps started around the beginning of the Preboreal and continued, with a few interruptions that are clearly visible in the curve of the radiocarbon dates, till the Medieval period.
