"El sostén de la esperanza. Un baúl en Luz de las crueles provincias de Héctor Tizón"

The present study intends to analyze, through the novel by Héctor Tizón Luz de las crueles provincias (1995), the memory of their land of origin that remains in foreigners, in this case, those who had to settle by necessity in one of the provinces of the Argentine interior. This is what happens to a young Italian couple who, after arriving in Buenos Aires, must travel to the north of the country to work on the land of an old owner. One of the motifs of the novel is the confluence between memory and the respective experience of the present of the protagonists in the attempt to define their identities. The element that accompanies the movements of the characters is a trunk, an object that in the novel could be considered a synecdoche of the story, because its presence triggers reflections, memories, emotions, as well as the disappointment of frustrated expectations. An object that, both in the lives of immigrants and their descendants and for countless fictional characters, reaches a redundant degree of significance.
