Gabriel García Márquez y el cine. La formación de un espectador cinéfilo en Colombia (1927-1961)

Gabriel García Márquez’s success as a writer has overshadowed other facets of his life, such as his relationship with films and cinema. In particular, during his formative years (1927-1961) it is worth insisting on his strong connection with cinema, because he had multiple and varied roles, including film critic, promoter of film clubs and film archives, film student and editor of documentaries, among others. The present work explores these overlooked connections between author, work, and cinema, based on a biographical review of García Márquez and recent studies on the history of cinema in Colombia. It also proposes to visibilize these relationships’ rich nuances that promoted both the successive formation of a cinephile spectator in the figure of García Márquez and some of the changes experienced by the film culture in Colombia during these decades of consolidation of a modern spectator
