Oral history in Italy lives a double life: it is undervalued and little recognised in the academic space but thriving and widely practised in society. Th e article outlines the “original characters” and trajectories of Italian oral history. It presents the activities carried out by the Italian Oral History Association (AISO) from its foundation in 2006 to the present. It discusses the not yet pacifi ed relationship between oral history and Italian academic historiography. Finally, it addresses the multifaceted relationship between oral history and archives, among the digital turn, “archival orality” and “archival activism”.
