The title compounds react with C2N2 in C2H4Cl2 or CH2Cl2 under ambient conditions undergoing cyanation of the organometallic ring. The products are unstable and evolve with different rates to cyanide-containing coordination polymers. [Zn(acac)2] is a very effective catalyst for the addition of C2N2 to Hacac to give 3-(cyanoiminomethyl)pentane-2,4-dione under ambient conditions.
