The paper explores the relationship between Swiss ethnographer Alfred Métraux and Scottish missionary John Arnott of the South American Missionary Society, which lasted almost a decade. The reciprocal influence between these individuals is described with regard to both religious and academic factors. The paper also provides an analysis of the historical, social and political context of the Anglican missions in the Argentinian Chaco during 1933-1939, when Métraux did his ethnographic fieldwork.
