The development of active packaging materials composed of poly (hexamethylene 2,5-furanoate) (PHF) and extractives from birch bark has been studied with the aim of coupling the high barrier properties of the polymer matrix with the active properties of the fillers. A modulation of the surface wettability and of the tensile behavior was achieved with no significant alteration of the already good CO2 and O2 barrier properties of the pristine PHF. Both antioxidant and antimicrobial activity were demonstrated.

Abstract

The development of active packaging materials composed of poly (hexamethylene 2,5-furanoate) (PHF) and extractives from birch bark has been studied with the aim of coupling the high barrier properties of the polymer matrix with the active properties of the fillers. A modulation of the surface wettability and of the tensile behavior was achieved with no significant alteration of the already good CO2 and O2 barrier properties of the pristine PHF. Both antioxidant and antimicrobial activity were demonstrated.
