Man’s Writing

Through the palaeographic study of the subscriptions of documents produced in Italy between the 8th and 10th centuries, with particular reference to the autograph subscriptions of members of the aristocracies, the possibility of self-representation through the use of particular graphic forms as an element demarcating masculinity is discussed. The study showed that writing does not constitute an identity factor of masculinity, nor does it constitute an element of status recognition. the hypothesis that the use of expanded writing is voluntary is thus questioned, identifying instead numerous cases of reduced literacy, while the use of current writing does not indicate any substantial differences.

Attraverso lo studio paleografico delle sottoscrizioni dei documenti prodotti in Italia tra i secoli VIII e X con particolare riferimento alle sottoscrizioni autografe di membri delle aristocrazie, si discute della possibilità della autorappresentazione attraverso il ricorso a particolari forme grafiche come elemento demarcatore di mascolinità. Lo studio ha dimostrato che la scrittura non costituisce fattore identitario di mascolinità né costituisce elemento di riconoscimento di status. si mette così in discussione l’ipotesi che il ricorso alla scrittura espansa sia volontaria, individuando in questa piuttosto numerosi casi di alfabetismo ridotto, mentre il ricorso a scritture correnti non indica differenze sostanziali.
