By focusing on the case-study of the Venetian theologian and canonist Paolo Sarpi, the article aims to shed light on how the Roman Inquisition's machinery worked in the early seventeenth century. In particular, the article examines the ways in which the repressive institutions of the Catholic Church used a vast array of tools in order to achieve their goals—from persuasion to corruption and force—and deliberately exploited the wider circuits of the early modern public sphere.
