«Bin einfach ein italienischer Künstler, Kommunist». Gabriele Mucchi und die Frühzeit der DDR

The article sheds light on the reasons and circumstances that led Italian artist Gabriele Mucchi (1899–2002) to settle in East Berlin in 1956, a city where he continued to live alternately with Milan even after the German reunification. At the beginning of his stay in the GDR, which began after the Moscow thaw in a climate of hope for “real socialism” and was then interrupted by the construction of the Berlin Wall, Mucchi found and cultivated an idealised image of East Germany as the home of a true anti-fascist and proletarian culture, a terrain of collective reconstruction and social participation.

Il contributo mette in luce le ragioni e le circostanze che spinsero l'artista Gabriele Mucchi (1899-2002) a stabilirsi nel 1956 a Berlino Est, città in cui continuò a vivere anche dopo la caduta del muro, alternandosi con Milano, e dove oggi riposa, nel cimitero centrale di Friedrichsfelde. All'inizio del suo soggiorno nella DDR, iniziato dopo il disgelo di Mosca in un clima di speranza per un “socialismo dal volto umano” – poi interrotto dalla costruzione del muro – Mucchi trovò e coltivò un'immagine idealizzata della Germania dell'Est come patria di una vera cultura antifascista e proletaria, terreno di ricostruzione collettiva e di partecipazione sociale.
