La parole des matrones. Identité féminine et ‘émancipation’ dans la Rome Républicaine

The paper aims to reconstruct the value code of Roman women who were expressions of the elite and consequently the identity that being recognized for themselves and the identity, not always coinciding, attributed to them by the male component of society. It investigates the roles reserved for these women in the community and on the concept of female emancipation referable to matrons. These issues will be examined through the analysis of significant episodes in republican history and in particular through the study of speeches given by men and relating to women and especially speeches given by women in which women exceptionally had the opportunity to claim firsthand their rights and position in society.

Il contributo si propone di riflettere sul concetto di emancipazione femminile nell'esperienza romana, tra II secolo a.C. e inizio I secolo d.C. Indaga il punto di vista maschile sul ruolo delle donne nella società, ma in primo luogo si adopera a ricostruire la visione che le donne avevano di se stesse. Esso sembra si possa cogliere nelle parole del tribuno Valerio nella sua suasio per l'abrogazione della Lex Oppia ma soprattutto nei discorsi di contenuto politico che tennero le stesse donne: Porcia nel 44 a.C. e Ortensia nel 42 a.C. Ne emerge un quadro per cui l'emancipazione a cui aspiravano le donne romane non corrispondeva alla parità dei diritti e dei doveri con gli uomini, ma al riconoscimento della propria identità di genere e del proprio ruolo nella società, diverso da quello degli uomini.
