Gustav Meyrink’s Der Golem (1915), translated into Italian in 1926, was a fantastic novel with a huge publishing success. Its fast reception in Italy is not only justified by the interest in esoteric or horror literature, but also by the modernist writing that characterises it. Translator and editor Enrico Rocca reads it as a “surrealistic composition”, in which new and significant trends in the literature and arts of the 1910s and 1920s converge, amalgamate and transform, and in which the title figure of the novel is deliberately rendered “invisible”.
