The tophet of Tharros (Cabras, Sardinia) was brought to light back in 1962 by the then Soprintendente alle Antichità della Sardegna, Prof. Gennaro Pesce, in the framework of the archaeological campaigns that he undertook between 1956 and 1964 in the urban area of the ancient site. This paper retraces the discovery of the sanctuary and its first archaeological excavation by analysing both edited studies and unpublished archive data.

Abstract
