This essay aims to analyse the relationship between Nadie me verá llorar (1999) by Cristina Rivera Garza and the novel Santa (1903) by Federico Gamboa, considering the strategy of intertextuality as a parodic subversion. Starting from Linda Hutcheon’s theory about postmodern intertextuality, Jacques Derrida’s deconstruction and Judith Butler’s idea of the “gendered body as a performative act”, I aim to demonstrate how the novel of Rivera Garza questions and subverts the ideology on the role of the woman in Santa. Through these narrative strategies, the author is able to achieve what she calls “community writing”. I argue that through the figure of “Matilda”, Rivera Garza demonstrates how in the Era of technology the author is not dead (as claimed by Barthes), but rather becomes plural.
