Mário de Andrade (1893-1945) was one of the leading figures of Brazilian Modernism. His novel Amar, Verbo Intransitivo, first published in 1927, appeared in 1944 in a second, reworked edition: the article aims to highlight the hermeneutic paths suggested through a collation of the two texts, stressing how their formal feature differs according to a new aesthetic sensibility developed in Andrade’s thought. It will be emphasized also how divergences such as a renewed language and an alteration in the narrator’s role enable a deeper comprehension of the novel’s significance.

Abstract

Mário de Andrade (1893-1945) was one of the leading figures of Brazilian Modernism. His novel Amar, Verbo Intransitivo, first published in 1927, appeared in 1944 in a second, reworked edition: the article aims to highlight the hermeneutic paths suggested through a collation of the two texts, stressing how their formal feature differs according to a new aesthetic sensibility developed in Andrade’s thought. It will be emphasized also how divergences such as a renewed language and an alteration in the narrator’s role enable a deeper comprehension of the novel’s significance.
