Preserving and Developing Romani language on TV: Good Practices from the Vojvodina Public Broadcasting Service.

This article examines the role of the Romani branch of the Public Broadcasting Service of Vojvodina (RTV) in the valorization of the Romani language. It argues that the efforts of this intellectual elite have been successful in raising the status of Romani at the official level and in linking language issues to strug-gles for educational advancement, social integration and emancipation. The first section presents the multilingual context of Vojvodina and focuses on the (in)visibility of the Romani language in the public sphere. The second part discusses the role of media in preserving endangered languages and multilin-gualism and reconstructs the emergence of the Roma editorial office at RTV. The third part deals with the linguistic practices of Roma in Vojvodina and the choices for bilingualism at the RTV Roma editorial office, while the last part explores the results of cooperation between the RTV Roma editorial office and other institutions, especially in the field of educational advancement.
