Abstract

In Ausonius’ Ludus septem sapientum the monologue of the ludius and the speeches of the wise men repeatedly allude to the rhetorical practice of the chreia and, in particular, to its different forms of treatment contemplated by progymnasmatic manuals. Thanks to this sophisticated procedure, the work lends itself both to being used as an original teaching tool and to be read as a divertissement for competent readers such as the recipient Drepanius.
