Abstract

Iran has crucial security interests—both conven- tional and unconventional—that have been put in serious jeopardy by the restoration of Taliban rule in Afghanistan. Unfortunately, there is no single strategy that the Islamic Republic can pursue that will ensure that these interests will be protected. The concept of the security dilemma highlights the paradoxes and trade-offs that statespeople must consider whenever they take steps to address ex- ternal threats. Explicitly incorporating those consid- erations into scholarly analysis will improve not only our understanding of complex conflict situations in the contemporary world but also the relevance and usefulness of analytical studies for beleaguered policymakers.
