A Study about Memories and Historical Studies of Disasters during the 20 th Century The study of the effects of the Second World War on civilians living in Campania, then extended to the traumas experienced by Italians and Europeans at that same moment, has led historian Gabriella Gribaudi to critically compare institutional and private memories among communities that experienced devastating events. The latter are often configured as controversial counter-memories. In the 2020 volume La memoria, i traumi, la storia, the author moves beyond the war context to examine earthquakes and floods. Her aim is to examine the relationship between public and private memories through a study of the various forms of catastrophe caused by the improvidence of human society. From this perspective, the analysis of the subjectivities of people who experiences collective traumas, to which media dedicate a huge attention, becomes a particularly important historiographical issue.
