Abstract

In a special issue dedicated to Mussolini’s trip in Sicily in 1937, the editor of the review La Phalange has gathered the contributions of many French intellectuals, passionate travellers through Italy. These exponents of a certain conservatism exalt the mythical archetypes that the Duce embodies, in order to strengthen the bonds of their common Latinity and confirm the French‑Italian understanding against the threat of a German‑Italian rapprochement. In an authoritarian and strongly modalized speech, broadcast over the radio, the Duce had made a clean sweep of the past stereotypes and proclaimed the existence of a young and new Italy. He had also stressed the importance of the Rome‑Berlin Axis and dismissed, in a polemical and disparaging tone, the League of Nations which had not recognized the Italian Empire in Africa. With his warnings to France and to the opponents of Fascism, Mussolini legitimizes his policy in the Mare Nostrum basin, based on the notion of “Mediterraneanità”, which now acquires a strategic geo-political value. The Fascist Regime, with which the Duce aspires not only to dominate the Italian territory, but also to impose himself internationally, had emptied of meaning the notion of “Latin sisters” in order to impose his new Italian referent.
