An Italian view of Haitian literature (translations from 1948 to 1998). Origins and characteristics of Haitian literature. Its first encounter with the Italian culture in 1948: the first translation of Gouverneurs de la Rosée by J. Roumain, plagued by misunderstanding and misapprehension. A quarter of a century later, Italy rediscovers Haitian authors: the poets, at first, the novelists, later. Translators and editors become interested in some of the great modern classics of Haitian literature (J.S. Alexis, R. Depestre, A. Phelps, P. Laraque, R. Dorsinville); later on, contemporary authors, those of later generations, would become more prominent, particularly those that dealt with the diaspora (É. Ollivier, J.-Cl.Charles, J. Métellus, D. Laferrière, L.-Ph. Dalembert), as well as others (Franketienne, J.-Cl. Fignolé).
