This article examines the idea of happiness in Laurence Sterne’s Sermons, offering a comparison with Archbishop Tillotson’s Sermons and broader Latitudinarian discourse, proving Sterne’s adherence to the Anglican doctrine in describing Man’s relationship with God and happiness. A close examination of the possibility to enjoy happiness both in this world and in the afterlife contributes to the description of human nature which, though depraved, is still able to employ rationality in defining its own benefit in moderation and obedience.

Abstract
This article examines the idea of happiness in Laurence Sterne’s Sermons, offering a comparison with Archbishop Tillotson’s Sermons and broader Latitudinarian discourse, proving Sterne’s adherence to the Anglican doctrine in describing Man’s relationship with God and happiness. A close examination of the possibility to enjoy happiness both in this world and in the afterlife contributes to the description of human nature which, though depraved, is still able to employ rationality in defining its own benefit in moderation and obedience.File in questo prodotto:
