In her article New Historical Evidence for the Dating of the Sacred Arsenal by Andronikos Kamateros (Revue des Études Byzantines, 67, 2009, pp. 111–130), Alessandra Bucossi proposes a revised chronology for the composition of the Sacred Arsenal (Hierá Hoplothḗkē) by Andronikos Doukas Kamateros, one of the most important Byzantine theological and polemical works of the twelfth century, written for Emperor Manuel I Komnenos. Traditionally dated between 1166 and 1175, the treatise is here more precisely placed around 1172, on the basis of new textual and historical evidence. Bucossi examines the structure and manuscript tradition of the work, which is divided into two sections: one against the Latin Church (centred on the Filioque and anti-Latin syllogisms) and another against the Armenians, addressing Christological issues. Through a re-evaluation of contemporary sources — such as George Skylitzes’ dedicatory verses and records of embassies and synods between 1160 and 1177 — she demonstrates that the Sacred Arsenal reflects the political and theological circumstances of 1172, when envoys from Rome, Germany, Sicily, and Armenia were simultaneously present in Constantinople negotiating church union. Further evidence from the theological discussions between Manuel and the Armenian teacher Peter, and from embassies of 1170–1172, confirms that the work was composed between 1171 and 1173 and likely presented to the emperor by early 1174. The Sacred Arsenal thus emerges as an official and sophisticated theological response to Manuel I’s policy of ecclesiastical union.

L’articolo di Alessandra Bucossi, New Historical Evidence for the Dating of the Sacred Arsenal by Andronikos Kamateros (Revue des Études Byzantines, 67, 2009, pp. 111–130), propone una nuova datazione per la composizione dell’Arsenale Sacro (Ἱερὰ Ὁπλοθήκη) di Andronikos Doukas Kamateros, uno dei principali trattati teologico-polemici del XII secolo bizantino, scritto per l’imperatore Manuele I Komnenos. Tradizionalmente collocato tra il 1166 e il 1175, il testo viene qui datato con maggiore precisione attorno al 1172, grazie a nuove evidenze testuali e storiche. Bucossi analizza la struttura e la tradizione manoscritta dell’opera, articolata in due sezioni: una contro la Chiesa latina (soprattutto sul Filioque e i sillogismi anti-latini) e una contro gli Armeni, incentrata su questioni cristologiche. Attraverso un riesame delle fonti coeve — come i versi dedicatori di Giorgio Skytzes e le testimonianze di ambascerie e sinodi tra il 1160 e il 1177 — l’autrice mostra che l’Arsenale Sacro rispecchia il contesto politico e teologico del 1172, quando a Costantinopoli si trovavano simultaneamente ambasciatori da Roma, Germania, Sicilia e Armenia, impegnati in negoziati di unione ecclesiastica.
