Abstract

Between the end of the eighth century and the first half of the ninth century the layout of the text in the Lombard epigraphs linked to the elite undergoes a transformation. The funeral poems that originally are of short extension become larger, the extension of the text is adapted to a horizontal layout divided into two columns. The possible explanation for this transformation could be linked to their placement at the burials. The comparative study between the width of the epigraphs and Lombard funerary monuments, from the burial arcosolium scheduled for the Queen Ansa at the church of San Salvatore in Brescia, suggests the parietal location of the slabs in the tombs arcosolium above the burials.
