This essay aims to analyse the incipit literary issue in Fortini’s poetic works. Particular attention will be given to “E’ questo è il sonno, edera nera, nostra”, opening act of the first collection of poems «Foglio di via» (1946). The paradigmatic value of the poem is indeed elliptic, as shown by the references present in the poet’s last work “«E questo è il sonno…» Come lo amavamo, il niente,”. Moreover, “E’ questo è il sonno, edera nera, nostra” acts as a resonance chamber, in which echoes from many different poetics, mostly belonging to the Italian Canon, can be heard.
