This article discusses the study of "traditional Islam" in Tatarstan/Russia and the conceptual as well as methodological specificities of anthropological approaches to the subject. It takes the cue from a set of circumscribed points raised in dialogue with Tatarstani scholars, before suggesting a conceptual framework for the comprehension of the phenomenon under investigation and arguing in favour of further discussion across disciplines.
