There is no person in 17th century Venetian history who can boast such an extensive iconography as Francesco Morosini. From the age of twenty his whole life was spent in the service of the Republic; a career in the maritime armada that led him to innumerable victories and guaranteed him a glory that was destined to last. Scrolling through his cursus honorum and assessing his exploits, it is easy to understand the reasons behind the popularity of his image, spread mainly through engravings and paintings. His election to the doge's dignity on April 3, 1688, while he held the position of Capitano Generale da Mar for the third time, increased both the patrician's self-celebratory aspirations and the demand for his portraits. The paper, limited to the princely phase of Francesco Morosini's life, focuses on the analysis of more or less well-known figurative texts, also drawing on the support of chronicles and literary works. In addition to identifying the political content of the images, it highlights the elements of continuity or novelty with respect to the Venetian tradition.
