Filippo de Pisis lived in Venice between 1943 and 1947, but he fell in love with the city when he was young; his joy when he looked at the paintings by Tiepolo and Francesco Guardi, he recalled the editions of the Biennale, or he just admired Lagoon water and its colours, was apparent. An investigation on what changed over time in his Venetian landscapes and how that place affected his spirit, allows us to delve into some concurrent themes, from the relationship with London’s landscapes to the en plein air technique. The dialogue with critics and art historians, and the perception of his work as an evolution of the 18th century Venetian landscape style, or as a descendant of the Impressionism, enriched the art scene and gave him fame and fortune, in fact he was invited to the exhibitions of the most celebrated artists of the time. For him – who, according to Lionello Venturi, was a “poet all day long” – the parting from the house in San Sebastiano was also closely related to his parting from life.
