After a preamble on some general issues of the movie Il Vangelo secondo Matteo the paper elucidates that, instead of quoting verbatim the speeches from Benvenuto Matteucci’s translation, Pasolini conformed them both to film acting and to his own stylistic and thematic perspective; hence it sheds a new light on a basic feature of the picture (the dialogue track and, albeit to a smaller extent, the screenplay’s speeches) referring to characters and techniques still unstudied: both Umberto Massi’s translation, which was transcribed in the first script draft, and even Matteucci’s version, which was used instead since the second redaction and mentioned in the film’s credits without the name of its author (who, alike Massi, remains still unknown to the viewers and to the scholars), as well as the several amendments Pasolini made to the latter, such as devices of syntactic change and register variation, the expunction of liturgical words, verbal iterations, dramaturgic devices, etc.
