The Sophoclean and Euripidean sections in the movies Edipo re and Medea by Pier Paolo Pasolini, are no sheer translations of the respective ancient tragedies: on the contrary, it is a matter of rewriting and contaminating some pre-existent Italian translations. This paper identifies the terms of this literary process, and supplies a brief analysis of the aforesaid sections from both a rhetorical and a thematic viewpoint.
