The essay provides a complete study of the literary models of the prefatory epigram of the Hexameron by Eugenius of Toledo, underlining the processes of refunctionalization of the paradigms relating to the topos of the Anrede an das Buch (Horatius, Martial, Optatianus Porphyrius, Ausonius), in light of the controversial relationship between the poet and Chindasvintus. Furthermore, the translation and the analysis of the dedicatory epistle to the Visigothic king illustrate the characteristic of Eugenius’ prose. Finally, the formal comparison between the epigram and the final recapitulatio sex dierum proves the aware intention of Eugenius to create a work worthy of an epigone of the classical philologists and the personal library of the king Chindasvintus.
