The essay proposes a new interpretation of the dressing of Venus in the Epithalamium dictum Maximo v.s. by Magnus Felix Ennodius. The description constitutes a hybridization between the profane representation of the goddess (knot-hair, kestos) and the clothing of the virgins nuptae deo (cyclas, a purplish dress adorned with gems and pearls). Moreover, an important literary source, not yet noticed by the recent studies, is identified: an ingredient of the potion of the witch Erichto in Lucan. 6,678 indisputably explains the verse 77 et latet in concis melior custode veneno in the Epithalamium.
