The article aims to re-examine the problem of ‘short’ datives of the o-stems in the Homeric language. The use of these forms appears to be due to stylistic and expressive needs (rhetorical and/or sound figures), metrical needs (including significant caesuras), syntactic needs or structural and flexible formularity. A further linguistic argument is provided for interpreting the ending -o in de-so-mo (KN Ra [1] 1548) as a plural instrumental (< PIE *-ōis, gr. -οις).

Abstract
The article aims to re-examine the problem of ‘short’ datives of the o-stems in the Homeric language. The use of these forms appears to be due to stylistic and expressive needs (rhetorical and/or sound figures), metrical needs (including significant caesuras), syntactic needs or structural and flexible formularity. A further linguistic argument is provided for interpreting the ending -o in de-so-mo (KN Ra [1] 1548) as a plural instrumental (< PIE *-ōis, gr. -οις).File in questo prodotto:
